Supplier Capability

   Supplier Capability
   Your choices are...

   Design Assistance

Suppliers assist with concepts, manufacturing costs, manufacturing techniques and material considerations. Suppliers may also be able to assist in upgrading or redesigning, re-evaluating or modernizing existing products to increase performance and/or reduce manufacturing costs. Some suppliers also offer material sourcing and computer-aided design (CAD) modeling.

   Part Procurement

Suppliers handle part/component procurement, including inventory management and billing activities.

   Prototype / Low Production Quantities

Suppliers have capabilities for rapid prototyping and small-run assembly for testing prior to bulk production. Often, suppliers offer very rapid turnarounds.

   Large Production Quantities

Suppliers have the equipment, staff, and materials for large production runs.

   Subsystem Assembly

Subsystem assembly includes smaller subsets of an overall complete assembly, including board interconnections, chassis wiring, motor wiring, etc.

   Full System Assembly (Box Build)

Full system assembly includes enclosures, panels, racks and test fixtures.

   Testing and Evaluation

Quality assurance or test processes are in place to ensure the quality of all assemblies. In some cases, suppliers also provide quality/testing documentation and/or testing services for other components/parts.

   Just-In-Time Capability

Suppliers have just-in-time manufacturing capabilities that produce parts on demand and reduce inventory levels.

Certification / Quality Requirement

   Quality Requirements:
   Your choices are...

   CE Marking

CE Marking indicates that a product complies with the essential requirements of relevant European Union (EU) directives that uphold national standards for health, safety and environmental protection. CE Marking is required in the countries of the European Economic Area (EEA), an organization that consists of the twenty five member states of the EU and the three members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). CE Marking refers to the safety of a product. It is not a quality standard.

   ISO 9001:2000

ISO 9001:2000, a part of the larger ISO 9000 standard, contains the actual requirements with which an organization needs to comply to become certified. ISO 9001:2000 replaces the ISO 9001:1994 quality standard.

   ISO 14001

ISO 14000 provides an internationally recognized framework for environmental management, measurement, evaluation and auditing. ISO 14000 does not prescribe environmental performance targets, but provides organizations with the tools to assess and control the impact of their activities, products or services on the environment. ISO 14001:1996, a part of the larger ISO 14000 standard, contains the actual requirements with which an organization needs to comply in order to become certified.

   QS-9000

QS-9000 is a quality standard for suppliers of DaimlerChrysler Corporation, Ford Motor Company, and General Motors Corporation. QS-9000 is based on the 1994 edition of ISO 9001, but contains additional requirements that are particular to the automotive industry. Specifically, QS-9000 applies to suppliers of production materials, production and service parts, heat treating, painting and plating and other finishing services.

   ISO/TS 16949:2002

ISO/TS 16949:2002 is an ISO Technical Specification that aligns existing American (QS-9000), German (VDA6.1), French (EAQF) and Italian (AVSQ) automotive quality systems standards for the global automotive industry.

   UL / CSA

The UL Listing Mark indicates that Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) has determined that representative samples of the product meet UL's safety requirements. These requirements are primarily based on UL's own published Standards for Safety. The UL Listing Mark is seen commonly on appliances and computer equipment, furnaces and heaters, fuses, electrical panelboards, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers and sprinkler systems, personal flotation devices like life jackets and life preservers, bullet resistant glass, and thousands of other products.

Products that bear a CSA Mark have been tested by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and meet applicable standards for safety and/or performance. These standards are written and administered by organizations such as the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Underwriters Laboratories (UL), and CSA International. CSA Marks may appear alone or with indicators. CSA Marks that appear alone are used with products certified primarily for the Canadian market, to the applicable Canadian standards. CSA Marks that appear with the indicators “C” and “US” or “NRTL/C” are used with products certified for both the U.S. and Canadian markets, to the applicable U.S. and Canadian standards.

   MIL-SPEC / STD

Suppliers manufacture labels or nameplates that meet military specifications (MIL-SPEC) or military standards (MIL-STD).

   Other
